Important Questions You Should Ask Your Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner

Are they a member of the National Upholstery and Carpet Cleaners Association?
NUCCA is the only industry body that is recognised by the government body’s, such as consumer affairs, and the carpet industry as a whole. NUCCA members pledge to a Code of Ethics, must be insured, and have formal training by an approved training body. In rare instance of a complaint against a member company you have somewhere to go for arbitration.

Are they an IICRC Certified Firm?
IICRC Certified Firms commit to an ongoing training program, and allow only trained technicians perform services they are trained in. This means your technician must know his job.

Are they WoolSafe accredited?
WoolSafe accredited technicians must undergo a complex wool carpet specific training course, be in the industry for at least five years, and commit to using WoolSafe approved cleaning products. As wool is the most chemically sensitive carpet fibre, if a chemical is safe to use on wool it is safe to use on all other fibres. So your carpet will be cleaned by trained technicians using safe products.

Do they have trained technicians do the work for you?
The only training course for carpet cleaning recognised by the Australian Govt is the Asset Maintenance Program. Only 10% of Carpet Cleaners in Australia have some sort of formal training in carpet cleaning,   some of which is in house training by unqualified personal. Our technicians have achieved Level 111 Asset Maintenance Program, and are WoolSafe and IICRC accredited.

What sort of chemicals do they run through their machine?
This is a trick question, if a carpet is cleaned to Australian Standard 3733, a carpet cleaner should not have any cleaning chemical going through their machine. This can cause rapid re-soiling of your carpet or upholstery. However, sometimes a rinse is used to neutralise the fibre, particularly to remove dry cleaning residues.

What is the Ph of the cleaning chemicals they are using?
Using chemicals that are not in 5-8 Ph range can damage the wool fibre, by yellowing, causing colour bleed, or even dissolve the fibre. Anything over a Ph of 10 can damage topical coatings applied to nylon fibre during the manufacture of your carpet.

What sort of equipment do they have?
Many carpet cleaners use old, inefficient, un-maintained equipment. This includes portable extraction units, truck mount extraction units and dry cleaning equipment. This can damage your carpet and upholstery by leaving it over wet, dirty, and in some cases burnt.

Do they offer a Guarantee and do they stand by it?
Customers have told of friendly carpet cleaners who have turned into rude, abusive, standover merchants when things have gone wrong. We want you to keep on using us, and we value our NUCCA membership, so in the rare event that something should go wrong, we try to fix it A.S.A.P.

Do they offer a no-obligation free inspection, measure and quote?
Quite often over the phone quotes are not honoured, with hidden extras and conditions (normally included) added on once the operator is in the door. An inspection tells you exactly what you can expect from your carpet cleaner, and should identify any problems that could arise.

Will they turn up?
One of the main frustrations of surveyed clients is carpet cleaners either not showing up or running late. This can happen, as some jobs can take longer than expected, breakdowns can occur with even the best equipment, vehicles can breakdown or be involved in accidents. However a quick phone call as soon as the technician knows there is a problem is just common courtesy.
